Watching a student achieve their goals and flying past them to achieve even more, is one of the privileges of being a tutor and a teacher. I have over 15 years experience as a teacher enabling students to have those feelings of pride and success. When I work with a student I believe that every pupil matters and I plan accordingly and personally for every individual student. This planning includes deciding on the preferred learning style of the student e.g. kinesthetic or oral. I can teach to any exam criteria or just to improve skills for work or personal development. I specialize in all aspects of English, both written and oral. I believe that learning should be an enjoyable experience. This is true whether you are 10 years old right up to being an adult. Every session must start and end with a positive. I plan in small stages so that sessions are accessible to allow the student to climb the scaffold to success.
I am a very relatable person. I believe that learning can be fun, but I also believe in encouraging and challenging students. This always brings out the best in them.
My goal is to ensure students understanding what is necessary for success and to realize my responsibility is to be their advocate and support system. I have been in the public school system for over 14 years and have experience with elementary and high school age students in English and Special Education.
I have over eleven years of experience as a college professor and have helped many students, both in class and outside of class. I have tutored American, European, and World History; AP History courses; Spanish courses; and done English tutoring for native and non-native speakers.
In my previous experience as a tutor (and substitute teacher and/or paraprofessional), I always try to impart information a little at a time, hoping there will come an instant in which the student has a "eureka" moment, allowing him or her to finish the problem without any further input from me. This way the student can have the thrill of a "eureka" moment and assuring them that they will have this thrill over and over again. This seems to be a particularly effective method when dealing with young people who have slight learning disabilities.
I have been an effective teacher and educator for 20+ years. I possess good class management skills. In the class setting I use multiple intelligence theory and in my teaching applying technology to educational strategy. Also, I have cultivated many skills and qualities of a good teacher: analytical, interpersonal, communication skills, a flexible team player, cultural sensitivity, good listener, patient, builds trust, and very comfortable in multicultural contexts. I believe in teaching students about education for life, not just about passing standardized tests. Students must learn to understand the practical nature of what they are studying.
I am outgoing and friendly. I'm an inclusive person, accepting of all different kinds of people. I am patient and calm but enthusiastic about learning and the exciting planet we live on. I look forward to helping others succeed in learning, and acquiring confidence in various topics--reading, writing, math, geography, geology, art, and more.
I am quite responsible with time and preparation to tutor my students. Additionally, I'm respectful of their own time and particular situations. Once tutoring, I try to give all my dedicated attention to what we are doing and ask for the same from the student. I know it is quite exhausting to be absolutely concentrated on one person or a few number of, but I've done it for years, so I know what it means.
As I tutor, I will plan and assist in implementation of programs/activities to enable students to attain appropriate achievement and adjustment. I have facilitated differentiation of instruction and providing enrichment to meet the needs of diverse learners.
I am an experienced public school teacher and have volunteered in schools since 2010. I have been practicing the art of teaching since 2010, and my love and expertise has grown immensely. I work hard to get to know the student so to understand their learning style.
I can be of assistance in the areas of English Writing, Grammar, Proofreading, Reading, and Vocabulary, having been a professional editor and writer for over 20 years. My areas of knowledge also include Architecture, Art History, and Biblical and Religious Studies.
Many years of experience has provided opportunities to work with students with special needs. Many of my referrals are from physicians, schools, community agencies, and churches. I am comfortable with students with ADD, ADHD, LD, ODD, Asperger Syndrome, and test anxiety. If needed, I assist families with improving home / school communication, and advocacy with Individual Education Plans. My goal is to work myself out of a job by encouraging the student to become as independent as possible with learning. Face to Face and Online counseling are available.
I received my undergrad and master's from the University of South Carolina, and English (especially writing) and history are my two great passions in life. I am always seeking to read and learn new ideas, and I love to share knowledge with others! I have taught logic to college students, swimming and flute to children, and worked as an PhD academic coach - so I enjoy working with all ages and levels of experience. History and writing are especially exciting subjects to tutor in because they are often taught in terribly boring ways; helping others to discover the joy of these subjects is a reward unto itself!
Throughout my fifteen years of teaching, I have worked to build an educational paradigm that includes essays, articles, poems and books from literary, historical, gender, and trans-national studies. Critical examinations of the patterns of development, rhetorical techniques, and advanced argumentation are the impetus for any course I teach. Whether working with public, charter, or private school students, I invite reading, writing, and thinking processes that challenge long held beliefs, open the doors of inquiry, and seek new knowledge.
My interest in people, culture, and language has brought me to live on 4 continents and study 5 languages, completing TESOL training for ESL students with top grades, and mastering Chinese Mandarin while living in China. With a real attention to detail, I help students find their area of need in order to improve their skills and achieve success in their language studies. Whether it is reading, writing, grammar, or speaking, I will assist the student to get to the next level.
If you need a tutor look no further! I have taught high school previously (physical science, chemistry, and physics), but I realized I enjoyed working with students one-on-one. I am very good at breaking down complex concepts and explaining them in easy to understand terms. I really enjoy working with children and teens, and I love helping people of any age learn!
I am ready to be your private tutor in Memphis, TN! I'm willing to work around student's needs and my goal is for students to become independent in their studies inside and outside the classroom. What I wish for students as well is that they are able to learn in accordance with their strengths.
As a private tutor, I feel that the most important thing for the child who is being tutored is to have someone who is an excellent communicator. Beyond that, I will make sure I have an excellent knowledge of the subject matter, and be able to pass along that knowledge to the child in a way that is easiest for them to understand. I feel that the parent/tutor relationship is of great importance. I will make sure that the parent or guardian is made aware of the child's progress, and also of any stumbling blocks the child may have.
I am encouraging and knowledgeable. I will do whatever I can to not only teach students about a subject, but also give them tools they need to learn about what they want to learn on their own when I am not able to tutor a student. I believe in the saying "give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat the rest of his life". I would not only use what I know about a subject, but also use the sources of peer-reviewed resources.
I'm energetic and eager to help students find their strengths and I nurture them using scaffolding to fill in the gaps and increase their confidence. I use my joy of learning to keep them involved in the lesson and on-task during a session. I will give every student my my best effort !
I am warm and friendly, my style is conversational, and I always seek to encourage and empower my students through providing them with comprehension of the content and relevant skill sets, including critical thinking about and engagement with the content. I encourage the student to ask as many questions as necessary and never rush them through content. Having studied education myself, my goal is always to patiently guide the student through comprehension of, critical thinking about, and creative engagement with the content. My passion is always to encourage and empower my students so that they will do better in the future on their own.
I am patient, hard-working, open-minded, and fair, but I am also tough with high expectations of my students. I have taught at the college level and know what is expected when students enter that arena from an instructor's point of view. I have knowledge in a wide variety of subjects and specialties, and I love learning just as much as I love teaching.
I have been a teaching assistant and tutor for two years at The University of Akron. I have an M.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in History and am a summa cum laude graduate. I have taught hundreds of students practical writing skills and practical Political Science/Government knowledge. My goal is to prepare my students/tutee's for their later academic careers and ultimately the job market.
As a tutor with over 10 years of experience with all grade levels, I work with students to understand the material. With me, a student has a nurturing environment in which to learn, strengthen skills, and improve weaknesses. With me, students gain confidence in their abilities, and as they continue to succeed and grow, they learn to become better students and to apply their knowledge to the outside world.
I have been a writing tutor for three years, working with high school and college students one-on-one in order to help them improve their own writing, be it academic or creative. I am currently a Master's student at Bowling Green State University, where I teach an academic writing course as part of my own studies. I am laid back but have a strong desire for my students to improve and be the best they can be.
